Made in Australia

As Sydney went a bit nuts last week on the opening of Topshop, I was more interesting in seeing what homegrown talent Australia had to offer and what on earth they’ve been doing retail wise until now.

You don’t have to be a print freak like me to notice the current PR[IN]T collection from General Pants Co. I love the tagline – ‘Welcome to a world where print overload is an understatement’.  A quick visit to their website unearthed The Bubble, a creative mentoring program that General Pants Co has been running for 5 years with design competitions for up and coming artists to unearth and nurture new talent.

I liked walking around and discovering smaller run boutiques where you can talk to the designers and creators of the garments. I bought a sweet tailored jacket from Sandy’s shop in Newtown and her shop was filled with newly hand screenprinted t-shirts from her own illustrations.

I can’t resist a museum or gallery gift shop and the Museum of Contemporary Art has a particularly good one. I nearly spent more time here than in the gallery itself.  I thought a brooch from this Love Hate collection would make a nice gift for one of the ladies I was staying with.
